BTRC Cracks Down on Illegal GPS Operators, Millions Affected
In a decisive move to regulate the GPS tracking sector, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has launched a nationwide crackdown on unauthorized service providers. The operation has led to widespread service disruptions for millions of users who relied on these unlicensed tracking services.
Targeting Unlicensed GPS Companies
The regulatory authority has begun deactivating servers of several vehicle tracking service (VTS) providers operating without proper approval. Among the targeted companies are Motolock, Tasslock, and Sinotrack, whose operations have been halted due to non-compliance.
This crackdown follows a warning issued last year after the Rapid Action Battalion arrested three individuals in Dhaka for illegally possessing and selling GPS tracking devices, including those from Tasslock and Motolock (BanglaNews24, Jugantor).
Widespread Internet and Server Blockades
As part of the enforcement measures, BTRC has blocked at least 36 URLs, IP addresses, and servers linked to unauthorized GPS operations. Internet service providers, international internet gateways, and telecom operators have been instructed to enforce these directives (Daily Sun, Ittefaq).
The regulatory body is also investigating how these unlicensed companies acquired bulk SIM cards without authorization (Bhorer Kagoj).
